Ulterior Motives

Instrumentation: Duet for two Alto-Saxophones or Soprano Saxophone and Alto Saxophone

Progam Note: Ulterior Motives was written in the summer of 2012, during my last few weeks living in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Since I was staying with Jennifer Blackwell during this time, I decided to write a composition as her “composer in residence” for the Blackwater Duo.
 
In a New York Times article written by David Lang entitled “A Pitch for New Music,” he states that “the success of a new composer or performer actually makes more room in the musical universe for other new musicians to follow.” I believe this statement to be very true, and in response I wrote this piece using the stylistic qualities of some of the best composers I have ever met, the CMU composition studio.
